General Information

Getting an Apartment

If you are moving to Edmonton and you don't know anybody here, you can try online sources like rentedmonton.com or viewit.ca or Broadwalk Apartments. Rent is 700 or up for one bedroom apartment and 850 or up for two bedroorm apartments. Usually 1 bedrooms are rented for around 800 and 2 bedrooms are rented for around 1000 that includes fridge, stove, heating, water and parking. You will have to pay for the electricity. But prices vary from company to company.

Employment Insurance (EI)

You can claim EI benefits (if you are eligible) after you move. Therefore, even if you are not getting a job, you are still financially safe, for as long as you are eligible (6 months or 1 year). It is a long enough time to get settled and find a job. In the current job market situation, anybody should find a survival jobs in few weeks.

A replacement personal health card can be requested by telephone, in writing or in person.

Moving Cost

If you are moving to Edmonton with a job offer, your employer may want to pay for the moving expenses. So, you can discuss it with your employer. If you don't have a job offer, you can subtract your moving cost from your gross income when you file taxes for that year. Therefore, you pay less taxes, get more child tax credit and so on.

Government Subsidised Houses

If you are interested and eligible, you can get government subsidised houses. It usually takes 6 months to 1 year. The time depends on the individual's financial situation and other factors like no. of child, disability, going to school etc.

Car Registration

If you bring your car to Edmonton, you will have to do a "Out of Province Inspection" on your car. Before you do that, you will have to get a form from the Registration Agencies. Fill it up and take it to the Auto Shop where you will do it. All licensed garages do it. So call a few and make sure you are not paying extra. The total process should cost you 150 - 170 dollars. Thats just the Inspection. Then you go back to the registration office and get your registration. They will require two photo ids, proof of residence (rental contract or bank statement showing your address), insurance and drivers license. If you can't find the Registration Office or a Garage for the Inspection - do a google search or contact one of the BCAE Executives.

Furniture

If you haven't brought your furniture, you sure need some. If you are a low-income canadian, you can get free furniture from a Not-for-Profit organization. You can also check used furniture stores or online source like craiglist. Otherwise, you can go to the big stores like Leons or Brick.
